Zanzibar Dialogue on Ending Corporal Punishment
As CSOs, our role was to highlight practical, child-friendly alternatives to corporal punishment, promoting positive discipline that guides, supports, and builds responsibility without harm.
We also emphasized the need for Zanzibar to strengthen its legal framework by reviewing and amending laws to prohibit corporal punishment in all settings, while advancing awareness, enforcement, and capacity building for teachers and parents.
Protecting children means choosing guidance over fear, creating safe spaces where they can learn and thrive. ✊🏽📚

30th April 2026 Marking the International Day to End Corporal Punishment, WiLDAF, in partnership with the Technical Working Group, Save the Children Tanzania, and UNICEF Tanzania, brought together a wide range of participants.
Government actors, civil society organizations, education stakeholders, child rights advocates, development partners, teachers, and students came together to examine the persistence of corporal punishment in schools and identify shared pathways for reform and stronger child protection.
The discussions focused on promoting safer, inclusive, and nurturing learning spaces that uphold the well-being of every learner without the use of harmful disciplinary practices.
Now is the moment to champion positive discipline, uphold dignity, and ensure every child is protected. ✊🏽📚
