Another delay to justice for the family of 15-year-old Janiya Carr.
The man accused of raping and killing the young girl in November 2023, rescinded his guilty plea in court this afternoon.
36-year-old Tevis Walker was preparing to plead guilty to murder and sexual misconduct with a minor. His other charges, including rape, would've been dismissed.
Instead, Walker told the judge he would prefer a jury trial.
Carr’s family and IMPD detectives were prepared to testify during the sentencing hearing.
Prosecutors said Walker signed the plea agreement months ago and that the prosecution "has been more patient than required."
They also told the judge this was the only plea agreement they would offer.
“These are the numbers at the lowest they will ever be,” deputy prosecutor Abigail Bohn told the judge.
Walker said he understood and requested a jury trial. He will now be tried on all of the original charges he faced, which could carry more than 250 years of total prison time.
Prosecutors will also once again file habitual offender and firearm enhancements, which were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
Both could lengthen Walker’s sentence if he is found guilty at trial.
A trial date is set for Sept. 22.
