I’ve been with govt, religious & civil society partners in Kyiv this week. As they recover from yet another night of brutal Russian attacks, it’s also clear that FoRB is under threat from Russian aggression in Ukraine. I’ll share more on my findings over the coming days.

Secular Principles in Practice: The Kyrgyzstan Model
———————————————————
Aibek Akchokoev (@hace_ihu )
📌This report examines the development of secularism in Kyrgyzstan and the transformation of the state's religious policies. Focusing on state–religion relations in the post-Soviet period, it analyzes how secular principles have been defined and implemented within a Muslim-majority society.
The study explores Kyrgyzstan’s regulations concerning religion in the context of religious freedom, state neutrality, national identity, and security policies. It also investigates the evolution of the country’s approach to secularism through an analysis of the Concepts of State Policy in the Religious Sphere issued in 2006, 2014, and 2021.
As the sixth publication in the HACE Report series, this report offers an assessment of secularism and state–religion relations in Central Asia through the case of Kyrgyzstan.

I lost count of how many rockets and drones were fired on #Kyiv tonight. Mom with a small boy in front of me in the basement closing his ears so he would not hear shots and/or explosions.
It’s a Ukrainian graffiti mural in Kyiv I came across this morning while walking outside of my hotel, it says: “Fear is not a reason not to act.” #Ukraine
New @ICCT_TheHague report by @MarcSommers & Mai Nasrallah asks a hard question: after 20 years and billions spent, has P/CVE actually prevented much?
Their answer is sobering — and it matters for Central Asia.
My reflection on what it means for CCRL in Central Asia
https://t.co/w81cA5dU88
I am deeply saddened by the shooting at the Islamic Center in San Diego. As a Christian, I mourn with the victims, their families, and our Muslim neighbors. There is no place for hatred or violence against innocent people. “Blessed are the peacemakers.” — Matthew 5:9
"CCRL is not simply about understanding other religions; it is about recognizing the truth-seeking nature of every human being." — Tina Ramirez #CCRL#ReligiousFreedom
The approach “seems to be more corporate and led by business deals, but it should probably become more institutionalized down the road, if the U.S. wants to seriously counter China and Russia in the region, and both of those countries have more institutionalized presence in Central Asia,”
