For nearly 40 years at Brown, Gordon S. Wood helped shape the study of early American history through his teaching, mentorship and award-winning scholarship.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning historian leaves an extraordinary legacy at Brown and far beyond, influencing generations of students, scholars and readers.

OTD in 1791 as he moved north during his #SouthernTour, President Washington travelled to Carters Ferry, Virginia (now Cartersville, shown below) on the James. There were few if any formalities on this day. GW & crew lodged at Moore's Tavern & crossed the James on June 9, 1791.
Terribly sad news from Jack Rakove. Gordon Wood passed away in a traffic accident.
Perhaps the greatest historian of the American Revolution. May he rest in peace.
OTD in 1791 in the late stages of his #SouthernTour, POTUS Washington passed near @HSC1776 spending the night at Prince Edward Courthouse (now Worsham on U.S. 15). In April 2025, I shared the tour story w/ a @HSC1776 alum group & visited @MountVernon w/ H-S prez Larry Stimpert.
When 102-year-old World War II veteran Wally King asks you to have a beer at the Stop Bar in Sainte-Mère-Église in Normandy, you have a beer (or two) with Wally King at the Stop Bar in Sainte-Mère-Église in Normandy. What an honor! Wally flew 75 combat missions in the Second World War in P-51 Mustangs and P-47 Thunderbolts. He was shot down in April of 1945, parachuting out of his P-47 over Germany and becoming a POW before then evading both German and Soviet forces on his way to freedom. Legend!
I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to Normandy with Wally three times for D-Day commemoration events with the Best Defense Foundation over the past few years. We always have a blast! 🇺🇸
It’s repetitive but still vital to say. There is NOTHING to Trump’s vote fraud assertions. There was nothing to them in 2016. Nothing in 2020. Nothing in 2024. Nothing in 2026. NOTHING AT ALL.
My late pop-in-law, Lt Carpenter from N.C., came ashore with the Big Red 1 on Omaha Beach on D-Day about 20 minutes into the landing in an LST filled with artillery pieces. His commander was killed. Carpenter was awarded the Silver Star for his actions on the beach for keeping cool, rallying men, and getting the artillery unloaded. For actions in N. Africa, Sicily, D-Day, and the Battle of the Bulge, he was awarded two Silver Stars & two Bronze Stars. It wasn't until 1990 that he ever talked about it, so typical of the Greatest Generation. He went home to be sports editor of the weekly paper.
One of my grandfather’s was in the 29th at Omaha. He miraculously survived the first wave with superficial wounds and lived into the early 21st century.
George Washington's decision set an informal precedent that largely held until term limits were codified by the 22nd Constitutional Amendment, ratified in 1951. https://t.co/BZ70fFQzza

My late pop-in-law w/ 1st Inf Division came ashore here in first minutes of the landing. My dad's unit came ashore Omaha Beach that late afternoon.
