1991, The First Gulf War has just ended. The Soviet Union is collapsing, taking the “old world” with it. The internet is being born, although none of us have the slightest clue because we're all still attached to landline phones. In movie theaters, Anthony Hopkins is busy traumatizing an entire generation with The Silence of the Lambs. A group of guys from Bristol have just released an album under the name Massive Attack, and a certain Kurt Cobain is about to shake the rock world to its foundations.
But in my everyday life as a teenager, none of that really mattered. My alpha and omega were finding a way—by any means necessary—to get my hands on every new rap release.
When I revisit my favorite rap albums from 1991, The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest naturally sits at the very top alongside Ice Cube's Death Certificate. But somewhere among De La Soul, Public Enemy, Main Source, Black Sheep, Digital Underground and KMD, there's this second album by 3rd Bass, released 35 years ago today. Pete Nice, MC Serch and DJ Daddy Rich, backed by production from Sam Sever, Prince Paul and the SD50 collective.
Maybe it never made quite the same impact as The Cactus Album did in 1989, but for many reasons, this is a record that left a lasting mark on me.
Happy 35th anniversary, Derelicts of Dialect.

Happy 35th anniversary, Derelicts of Dialect.
