I run a tech firm. And I'm going to tell you something I probably shouldn't:

Stop hiring agencies for your startup.

Not because they're bad people. But because the way the model works - it quietly works against you.

Here's what I've seen happen, over and over:

You get on a call. The senior partner is sharp, asks the right questions, gets it. You feel good. You sign.

Then the work begins - and you're handed off. The person actually building your product is two levels removed from the conversation you had. They're talented, but they've never felt the pressure of your runway. They don't lose sleep over whether users will actually show up.

So they build what was written down, not what you meant.

Three months later you have something that technically "meets the brief." But it doesn't feel right. The market has moved. And now you're stuck - because changing direction means renegotiating scope, justifying every tweak, and watching the hours tick up.

That's not a vendor problem. That's a structure problem.

The agency model rewards time spent. Your business rewards speed and learning. Those two things pull in opposite directions - and you feel that tension every single week.

What actually works at the early stage is someone who sits with you in the uncertainty. Who says "should we build this at all right now?" before opening a code editor. Who treats a wrong turn as their problem too, not just yours.
