10 years ago I was studying music at @tcddublin when I got a call that my mother Ginny McCullough had a stroke.

“Danse L’Intervention” was hands-down one of the most challenging artistic endeavors I’ve ever poured myself into. Seven minutes of string intensity, layered, intricate, emotionally raw. Like the postmodern musicians I was studying at Trinity College.

The inspiration of this song came straight from watching my mom, Ginny McCullough, fight her way back from a stroke. I saw her in those early days — the frustration, the exhaustion, the quiet, stubborn fire it took just to relearn how to move, speak, and live again. That experience lived in every note I wrote. The swells, the tension, the moments of fragile beauty… they weren’t abstract. They were her. They were us. They were the love and fear and hope that live in any family walking through something like that.

Then came Alex Boyes and the collaboration with the @MedicalCollege and their Project Wonder: The Art of Science program. Pairing my music with their cutting-edge neuroscience visuals, directed by @wes_tank, took it to another level.

I’m used to creating in the studio, alone with my thoughts and my instruments. This was different — marrying sound with real scientific imagery of the brain healing, neurons firing, resilience happening at a cellular level. It forced me to dig deeper, to make sure the music wasn’t just pretty, but truthful. Honest. Worthy of the story it was carrying.

Closing out my 17th studio album, Cú Chulainn, with this piece felt right. It’s the final statement on an album that’s been a long, winding journey through myth, memory, and mortality. And now it’s out there — streaming, living, doing its thing in the world.

I’m really, really pleased with how it turned out. Not just sonically, but emotionally. It feels like we actually captured something real. Something that can sit with people who’ve been through their own version of this fight, or who love someone who has.
