After a brief hiatus yesterday, I'm back and excited to talk about #collaboration! My favorite part of any job is what i call “see a need, fill a need.” (A phrase I borrowed from this guy in the 2005 movie "Robots", which scored a 64% on Rotten 🍅 but a 100% in my ❤️.)
Fill a need 👩💻: My job is to learn enough about their question to identify the data needed and explore statistical options. Then, once the analysis is completed communication plays a huge part in making sure that the worth on both sides of the team is correct.
I've been lucky enough to collaborate on all kinds of areas: infectious diseases like HIV and HPV, child welfare, the opioid epidemic, and neurodegenerative disease to name a few.
See a need 👀: When I enter into new projects or collaborations, I meet new experts in their fields with interesting questions! They have identified a "need" for answers.
As faculty, I can open students’ eyes to the multitude of paths unlocked by training in statistics. And beyond the classroom, I engage with outreach like Florence Nightingale Day (https://t.co/irEXkzslMO) which aim to introduce pre-college students to the fun of stats earlier!
Real talk 🗣: I've wanted to be a statistician since 11th grade, which is pretty early. I was drawn to data and their ability to help us answer questions. And, dare I admit, captivated by the idea that you could reduce questions to a p-value (it was 2011, it was another world).
