This #WorldMicrobiomeDay, we ask: whose microbes are we actually studying?
We caught up with Dr. Anna Ursula Happel, @womenlifthealth Southern Africa Global Fellow and Academic Leader of the Microbial Interactions Lab at @UCT_news.
Her message was clear: "Who we study and who leads the research, really matters."

Nearly 1 in 2 TB patients in Kenya also live with a mental illness, yet mental health is not routinely integrated into TB care.
Through the Tamatisha TB Programme, our Global Fellow Dr. Nkirote Nyaboga piloted integrated screening for TB, mental health and malnutrition in Kiambu County, identifying more than 1,800 previously undiagnosed mental illness cases in just one year.

We were delighted to host the first cohort of the Women Leaders in Science Entrepreneurship (WLSE) program at our campus for a seminar on โFrom Research to Impact: Women Leaders Driving Bio-Innovation.โ
The session brought together 20 mid-career women scientists and innovators to explore the realities of building science-led ventures, from research translation and commercialization to leadership, partnerships, and ecosystem support.
A highlight was hearing inspiring entrepreneurial journeys from women founders, followed by a panel discussion on innovation leadership, investment readiness, collaborations, and scaling science-based solutions.
We are proud to support initiatives that empower more women to lead innovation-driven enterprises and strengthen Indiaโs bioeconomy.

๐Hyderabad, India
The 2026 WLSE cohort convened for the inaugural Immersion, marking the start of a 12-month leadership journey led by @gateschallenges, @BIRAC_2012 and @womenlifthealth.
Over five days, women leaders in STEM and health reflected on leadership identity, strengthened self-awareness, and built trust and shared purpose across the cohort.
A key highlight was the institutional visit to @IKP_SciencePark on โFrom Research to Impact: Women Leaders Driving Bio-Innovation," with reflections from Dr. Satya Prakash Dash and Dr. Radha Rangarajan on the role of women in advancing bio-innovation and translating research into impact.
The Immersion set the foundation for a year of leadership growth, collaboration and deeper engagement across Indiaโs STEM & health ecosystem.

As part of the first residency of the Women Leaders in Science Entrepreneurship (WLSE) program in Hyderabad (2โ5 June), the cohort had the opportunity to visit IKP Knowledge Park on 5 June for an inspiring and insightful session on "From Research to Impact: Women Leaders Driving Bio-Innovation."
WLSE is a one-year leadership development program launched by @BIRAC_2012 - Grand Challenges India in partnership with WomenLift Health, bringing together a diverse cohort of women entrepreneurs and innovators in STEM fields.
The visit to @IKP_SciencePark offered a valuable window into the realities of translating scientific research into impactful ventures. Through discussions on the strategic importance of women leaders in bio-innovation, participants gained perspectives on navigating the journey from laboratory discoveries to real-world solutions. A particularly enriching part of the day was hearing firsthand startup stories from women founders who shared their entrepreneurial journeys - the challenges, pivots, lessons learned, and the resilience required to build science-based enterprises. These candid conversations provided practical insights and inspiration for innovators at different stages of their own leadership journeys.
The panel discussion on "From Research to Impact: Women Leaders Driving Bio-Innovation" further highlighted the importance of leadership, partnerships, investment readiness, ecosystem support, and persistence in advancing innovation from concept to scale. Beyond the sessions, the visit created space for meaningful dialogue, peer learning, and networking among women leaders committed to driving impactful solutions.

On this International Day of Action for Women's Health, we celebrate and recognize the women who are building stronger, more inclusive, and resilient health systems.
WomenLift Health Global Fellows are changing what's possible in communities across the world. A gynaecological oncologist improving cervical cancer care in South Sudan from the ground up. A researcher in India fighting for the day a woman can walk into a clinic and have her menstrual pain taken seriously. A surgeon who is developing training platforms and local expertise to promote access to safe childbirth in East Africa.

Authentic leadership starts with knowing who you are and what matters to you.
This session aims to help you slow down and reflect on the values and purpose that shape how you lead. Itโs not only about naming what matters, but also about understanding how those values show up in moments of pressure, opportunity, and uncertainty.
As you work through the module, you will build greater clarity, confidence, and self-awareness to lead in a way that feels intentional and true to who you are.
Only one day left to apply. Secure your spot today: https://t.co/VWjVvbd8z2

We're proud to celebrate our 2026 East Africa Cohort member, @NsubugaDiana, in her new role as Head of Division โ Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (MNCAH) and Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) at the @AfricaCDC
A dedicated champion for women's and children's health, Dr. Diana shows how 20+ years of expertise, equity-focused leadership, and commitment to community-centered care can transform health systems across Africa.
Congratulations, Dr. Diana!
Women make up more than half of science graduates in sub-Saharan Africa. But only 28% go on to attain PhDs, and even fewer reach the rooms where decisions are made.
Women are behind some of Africa's most critical health breakthroughs, from the first mRNA vaccine for Rift Valley fever to expanding reproductive health access across Zambia. Yet too many remain celebrated for their contributions but excluded from the leadership that shapes funding, policy, and implementation.
Our 2025 Southern Africa Global Fellows, Dr. Duduzile Ndwandwe and Rutendo Kandawasvika, voice what it will take to change this.

On #InternationalNursesDay, we were proud to spotlight two extraordinary women leaders from our 2026 Leadership Journey: Beatrice Zulu, a District Nursing Officer in Zambia, and Jesca Chepkirui, a midwife in Kenya. They exemplify what it means to lead from the frontlines, navigating emergencies, driving systemic change, and advocating for the communities who need them most.
Their message was clear: when nurses are empowered to lead, lives are saved, and health systems grow stronger.

We're reflecting on the powerful insights shared at the Nigeria Leadership Journey Lift-Off, held in partnership with @womenlifthealth.
The keynote address by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammed Ali Pate, underscored a vital truth: Nigeria cannot reach its full potential without inclusive, representative, and evidence-based leadership.
We are sharing these three core lessons with our community of women leaders to equip you with the strategic tools needed to drive systemic change and improve the nation.

Women & girls often carry the greatest burden, yet they are also among the strongest drivers of the response, especially as community health workers on the frontlines. Still, their knowledge and leadership are too often left out of how solutions are designed.
On this #WorldMalariaDay, weโre reminded that malaria is not only a health challenge, but also a deeply gendered one.
Ending malaria requires more than medical innovation. It requires addressing the structural barriers that shape access to prevention and care.
