30 years ago today, on July 17, 1996,TWA Flight 800, a Boeing 747-131, N93119, crashed in the Atlantic Ocean near East Moriches, New York. The NTSB concluded that the probable cause of the loss of TWA Flight 800 was an explosion of the center wing fuel tank after the fuel-air mixture ignited.
Investigators determined the most likely ignition source was an electrical short circuit that allowed excessive voltage to enter the fuel quantity indication system.
