Strong clinical research ecosystems are not built by isolated sites. They are built through collaboration, standardization, visibility, and shared excellence.
Across Sub-Saharan Africa, many capable research sites remain outside the global clinical trial ecosystem—not because of limited expertise, but because they lack access to the networks, partnerships, and visibility that drive multinational studies.
This is why the Xcene Research Site Alliance Network (XRSAN) was created.
XRSAN is designed to connect high-performing clinical research sites, strengthen operational readiness, and position sites for greater participation in globally compliant clinical trials.
Because the future of clinical research in Africa will not be built by individual institutions working alone, it will be built through connected, research-ready ecosystems.
Swipe through to explore why networks like XRSAN matter for the future of clinical research.

Most Clinical Trial Recruitment Strategies do not fail because of a lack of patients. They fail because they are built on the wrong assumptions.
Africa has more than 3,000 ethnic groups, languages, and cultural systems across the continent. Patient engagement is shaped by factors that go far beyond clinical definitions of disease. Health decisions are influenced by community structures, trust in healthcare systems, cultural beliefs, and lived experiences that differ widely from one region to another.
In today’s article, Xcene Research explores effective strategies for developing robust recruitment models for African clinical trials.

Our CEO, Adebukunola Telufusi, recently met with the Honorable Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, to reflect on Xcene Research’s decade-long impact as a Clinical Research Organization (CRO) and to outline our strategic roadmap for the next 10 years.
The discussion highlighted our ongoing expansion in clinical trials and laboratory research, the development of a robust framework for research and development, our expanding footprint across Africa, and the Xcene Research Site Alliance Network (#XRSAN).
According to our CEO, Adebukunola Telufusi: Our goal for the next decade is to ensure Africa plays a central role in scientific data and solutions, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and global stakeholders. Self-reliance in Nigeria and Africa, strengthened by strategic collaboration with international partners, is essential to robustly elevate the local research ecosystem and drive sustainable innovation. This principle underpins our decade-long impact, our expansion in clinical trials and laboratory research, and our commitment to a resilient, Africa-centered research landscape through the Xcene Research Site Alliance Network (XRSAN).
We remain dedicated to close collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Nigeria, as well as other stakeholders, to cultivate a resilient research environment that delivers life-saving innovations for all Africans.

#Oncology burden in Nigeria and across Africa remains substantial, with high incidence and mortality from common cancers and challenges such as late-stage presentation and limited access to affordable therapies. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in many African settings, while cervical cancer continues to be a leading cause of cancer-related mortality due to screening gaps. Treatment availability varies by country and region, with persistent gaps in access to targeted therapies, radiotherapy, and timely diagnostic services in many markets. Africa hosts a growing ecosystem of cancer research networks and trials, yet there remains a need for expanded capacity, data sharing, and multi-site trial infrastructure to accelerate discovery and bring therapies to patients faster.
@xceneresearch recently engaged with the National Institute of Cancer Research and Treatment (@NicratGov) to explore strategic partnerships that advance research, prevention, early detection, treatment access, and #clinicaltrials for Nigerian and African cancer patients. This engagement aligns with NICRaT’s mandate and strengthens collaboration to accelerate cancer care across the region.
Our Collaboration Vision centers on a joint commitment where Xcene Research and Xcene Laboratories and Diagnostics will collaborate across research, early detection screening, treatment access, and clinical trials. There is a regional emphasis on cancers with the highest burden in Africa and Nigeria, including breast, ovarian, liver, cervical, prostate, and pediatric oncology. We also aim to enhance transparency and visibility of research and trials through the Xcene Research site alliance network, integrated with NICRaT’s existing alliance network to attract more research opportunities.
Strategic priorities include a focus on oncology areas such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, and pediatric oncology, alongside research and trial acceleration, streamlined pathways to initiate and conduct clinical trials with patient-centric design and robust data sharing. We are committed to expanding access to affordable, community-based early detection and screening programs to improve early diagnosis and outcomes, facilitating equitable access to innovative therapies and standards of care across Nigeria and neighboring regions, and strengthening local research capabilities, clinical trial infrastructure, and workforce development.
Our alignment with NICRaT’s mandate centers on supporting cancer research, prevention, treatment, and control across Nigeria and Africa, while leveraging Xcene’s alliance network to attract additional high-quality research projects. This collaboration embodies a shared value proposition: a patient-centric research ecosystem that prioritizes timely access to cutting-edge therapies and evidence-based care, with a commitment to a scientific culture that increases access and saves lives.
During the meeting, our CEO, Adebukunola Telufusi, stated that “The best time to create these solutions is now.” This sentiment reflects our determination to act boldly and decisively to improve cancer care. We are proud to align with NICRaT’s mandate to enhance visibility and value in cancer research, prevention, and treatment because progress in cancer care cannot occur in silos. Together, we are nurturing a scientific culture that increases access and saves lives.
Looking ahead, we plan to finalize a joint collaboration framework that outlines governance, data sharing, co-branding, and joint communications, and to develop a co-branded project pipeline highlighting priority studies in breast, ovarian, cervical, prostate, and pediatric oncology. We will also create a transparent, patient-centric protocol for trial recruitment, ethical oversight, and informed consent tailored to local contexts, and schedule follow-up stakeholder meetings to confirm milestones, resource commitments, and KPI targets, including trial initiation timelines, screening program roll-out, and capacity-building activities. Importantly, all treatment initiatives emphasized here are anchored in improving access to cancer care for patients in Nigeria and across Africa.

Africa holds 16% of the world’s population, yet contributes less than 3% of global clinical trials. This gap limits access to innovative therapies, delays medical breakthroughs, and leaves much of Africa’s unique health data untapped.
At @xceneresearch, we’re bridging that divide as your Indigenous #CRO Partner with Local Expertise and Global Impact across Sub-Saharan Africa.
As an indigenous Contract Research Organization (CRO), we understand the local context, regulatory environments, and community dynamics that shape successful studies in Africa.
Our mission is simple: to accelerate access to life-saving treatment across Sub-Saharan Africa by combining local expertise with global standards of quality, ethics, and compliance.
From bioanalysis to site management, data monitoring, and patient engagement, we’re building the infrastructure and capacity needed to make Africa a true partner in global research.

At ASCAT 2025, Xcene Research was honoured to share its journey in advancing sickle cell disease (SCD) clinical trials across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Our Executive Director, Adebukunola Telufusi, represented by Uchechukwu Nwaoha, a Senior Clinical Trial Associate at Xcene Research, presented on the theme:
Conducting SCD Trials in Sub-Saharan Africa: Milestones, Insights, and Xcene Research's Impact.
With a decade of experience conducting SCD trials in 5 Sub-Saharan African countries alongside global sponsors, we have learned that the true success of a clinical trial extends beyond recruitment and retention.
Our experience has led to important insights such as:
- The value of strengthening industry trial experience at sites
- The role of infrastructure and accredited laboratories in trial quality
- How regulatory pathways and sample logistics shape trial timelines
- The importance of comprehensive patient support systems
- The need for sponsors to adapt protocols to African healthcare realities and nuances
These continue to guide us as we work to bridge gaps, enhance capacity, and deliver impactful research outcomes for communities across Africa.
