Kanye West heard Eminem's verse on "Forever" and canceled two days of appointments to rewrite his own. Lil Wayne heard it and scrapped his verse too.

That's how competitive this record was. And the wildest part is that it almost didn't exist.

Boi-1da built the beat in early 2008 for Kardinal Offishall, who passed on it. The rejected instrumental got sold to a Toronto kid best known for playing Jimmy on Degrassi, who turned it into a mixtape song called "I Want This Forever."

That kid was Drake. When the remix dropped on August 27, 2009, he'd been signed to Young Money for about ten weeks and had never released an album.

He still got the opening verse.

Why? Because it was his song. LeBron James needed a lead single for his "More Than a Game" documentary, the label needed star power, and Drake's camp turned that leverage into the greatest co-sign in rap history. A rookie's name listed first, ahead of Kanye, on a track he technically owned.

The other three verses on that song came from artists holding 27 Grammys between them. The first verse came from a guy whose debut album was still ten months away.

Seventeen years later, the guy rapping over the reject beat became the most streamed artist of the entire era.
