Africa’s AI ambitions may depend on something most people aren’t talking about enough: computing infrastructure.
According to the African Data Centre Association’s 2026 report, Africa accounts for just 0.6% of global data centre capacity. For a continent seeking to build, train and deploy its own AI systems, that is a major constraint.
But what if African countries stopped trying to build AI infrastructure separately and started sharing computing power?
At BUILD 2026 @aicollectiveng in Abuja, Nigeria, there has been growing discussion around stronger regional collaboration and shared AI computing infrastructure that could give African researchers, startups and institutions greater access to the computing resources needed to develop AI solutions.
Imagine what this could mean for healthcare, agriculture, African-language AI models, financial services and scientific research.
Instead of every country carrying the full cost of AI infrastructure independently, regional collaboration could help pool resources, reduce duplication and expand access to computing power.
But infrastructure alone won’t solve the problem.
Africa also needs reliable electricity, skilled AI talent, strong data protection, quality datasets and effective AI governance.
The bigger question is therefore not simply whether Africa can use AI.
It is whether Africa can build and govern the infrastructure necessary to shape its own AI future.
