After a struggle of 2 years and fighting legally in courts, an elite school Ecole des Lumieres working in residential area of F-11/3, Islamabad, the street where I live, has been finally evicted. The school despite charging heavy fees has been working for years in residential area to pay less rent in residential vis-a-vis commercial areas and making residents’ life miserable with traffic jams in street, cars parked, loud music, etc. Even they’ve been paying electricity rates of homes instead of commercial rates.

Ironically, the school is run by a French lady and students are taught ethics while its owners kept stealing electricity and getting undue advantage of rent while making lives of neighbours miserable. Their staff was type of goons who used to terrorise street residents whenever we raised any complaints.

@CDAthecapital was hand in gloves with violators and did nothing on numerous complaints and meetings. Final relief came from the court, alhamdolillah.

⛽️Petroleum price hike: necessity and strategic correction

The increase in petroleum prices is not arbitrary it is economically inevitable. With global diesel prices around $280 per barrel and the government bearing nearly Rs 60 billion in weekly subsidies, continuing blanket relief is fiscally unsustainable and risks serious economic instability.

At the same time, this is a strategic shift. Instead of inefficient universal subsidies where both motorcycle users and 1300cc car owners benefited equally the focus is now on targeted support. Subsidies should go to goods transport, public transport, small farmers (up to 25 acres) and motorcycle users, ensuring resources reach those who actually need them.

Despite global tensions and supply pressures through routes like the Strait of Hormuz, Pakistan has avoided panic no rush at petrol pumps, no hoarding and no supply disruption. This reflects effective management.

Data further strengthens the case: despite recent price hikes, petrol consumption has not decreased. In fact, March 2026 consumption rose by 19% compared to March 2025, showing that blanket subsidies were neither efficient nor effective.

Going forward, demand side measures should complement this policy. A smart lockdown markets closing by 9 pm, restaurants by 11 pm and limited physical attendance in institutions can reduce unnecessary fuel consumption without halting economic activity.

This is not just a price hike it is a necessary structural correction ending inefficient subsidies, protecting the vulnerable and maintaining economic stability.
