Sixteen years ago, ex-MLB pitcher John Trautwein lost his 16-year-old son, Will, to suicide.
Will was the captain of the lacrosse team. A leader. A straight-A student. As far as his family knew, they had never had a bad day. Then came 3:30 AM.
In our latest conversation on Something For Everybody, John shared something that every parent, coach, and friend needs to hear: depression in young people—especially high achievers—is often completely maskable. The only warning sign they missed? Trouble sleeping.
When a teenager going through the silent pressure of today's world and is wide awake at 2:30 AM, those are the hardest hours.
Here are 3 core takeaways from John’s story on how we can show up for the people we love:
Stop looking at their world through old eyes. Kids today face a 24/7 barrage of comparison, academic pressure, and public failure. Validate how hard it is instead of trying to fix it by dinner.
Normalize not being OK. Create a space where vulnerability isn't seen as weakness.
Build Life Teammates. Ask your kids or friends: If you were really struggling today and couldn't talk to me, who is the ONE person you would call? Help them name their plan before they need it.
Who better understands what you're going through than someone walking the exact same path?
Be that teammate today. Watch or listen to the full episode now: https://t.co/uxkcDgvWTp
