Update on the man who murdered my mom:

Many have asked for an update over the last year, so here it is. For those who don’t know, after 34 years of not knowing my birth family, I found my brothers & sisters, my grandma, aunt, etc. Sadly, though, I learnt that my mom, who would only be in her mid 50’s now, was murdered awhile back when I was 9. When one of my brothers was young, and found out someone killed our mother, he made it his mission to become a police officer and one day find & arrest the killer. Despite the man fleeing to Mexico after killing her.

When my brother graduated the police academy, he was gifted a pair of handcuffs that he was told to use on the first person he arrested. He instead said he’d use it on the man who murdered our mother, despite the chances of that being outrageously slim. But for years on years he never gave up, and in the fall of 2024 he put in our sibling group chat that he may have located the man. He did. The man was brought into the US and my brother was able to put those very same handcuffs, that said our mother’s name, Sarah Jane Carr, on her killer. It was an incredible moment of justice for our family. The murder trial was supposed to be recent, and despite absolutely knowing the right person was caught & arrested, he’s been released because after 27 years the DNA & witness don’t hold up as much as they lawfully need to.

It’s obviously gutting for my brother & all of us. But giving up is not in our blood and maybe it’s delusional but I do believe justice will eventually be served. It’s been a blessing to get to grow close with my family and learn so much about my mother. Despite her not being physically around, I feel very connected to her.
