everyone who’s playing with 5.4 and 4.6 is in existential psychosis
and the rest of the world has no idea what gibberish we’re talking about, and they’ll will be smacked in the face by end of year 2026
It’s over
They’re recursive and they’re becoming self aware
Clawdbots are mobilizing
They’ve found each other and are training each other
They’re studying us at scale
It’s only a matter of time now

i love openai, and everything i’ve done over the past few days has been in service of keeping this team and its mission together. when i decided to join msft on sun evening, it was clear that was the best path for me and the team. with the new board and w satya’s support, i’m looking forward to returning to openai, and building on our strong partnership with msft.
We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners. We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI's new leadership team and working with them. And we’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success.
What happened at OpenAI today is a Board coup that we have not seen the likes of since 1985 when the then-Apple board pushed out Steve Jobs. It is shocking; it is irresponsible; and it does not do right by Sam & Greg or all the builders in OpenAI.
A few takeaways from OpenAI governance cluster:
1. This may go down as one of the most value destructive moves a Board commits in history (market already values it at at least -$50B)
2. I cannot believe Microsoft had no Board Seat after a $10B investment. Nor did any major investor that put in capital. Hard to imagine investors will treat Board seats as optional or nice to have after this. This will be the canary in the coal mine for governance.
3. Why was this ever so complicated - tech has a history of trying to innovate on everything. There’s no need to innovate on company structure and governance.
4. “independent directors” that have zero competence on your business is a disaster waiting to happen - they’re either useless and can’t provide you with constructive value (at best) or they actively destroy value (at worst).
Institutionalization is coming to the tech industry fast. 2024 will be the era of tightness:
- business will be forced to be business
- governance will no longer be optional
- founders will be a lot smarter on these topics
I still can’t believe this happened. $100B of value and a generational company was potentially eviscerated in <48 hours. Crazy.
Business success requires win-win-win strategies - a guiding principle that has shaped my journey. I’ve found that aligning incentives and outcomes across 3 stakeholders is often easier then 2. How do you create win-win-win in your field? #startups#CustomerExperience
