Chivi MP Exevia Mawoneke says high mobile data costs are choking Zimbabwe’s digital growth, calling for policy and regulatory reforms to make internet access more affordable. Moving a motion in Parliament, Mawoneke said Zimbabwe now has more than 13 million active internet subscriptions, but limited competition among service providers continues to keep data prices high, constraining innovation and digital participation.

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume says the hard-line approach to clearing vendors in the capital is being driven by growing concerns over drug sales, with some traders allegedly turning the streets into outlets for sexual herbs, loosely known as mushonga wemusana. This comes as vendors continue to resist the ongoing clean-up, saying street trading is their only source of income. The crackdown also comes amid resurfacing allegations that council has failed to account for a reported US$12 million collected through vendor fees. Cllr Mafume speaks

Advocate Lewis Uriri has declined a 2026 Range Rover Sport Autobiography reportedly valued at US$250,000, along with US$100,000 in cash offered by businessman Wicknell Chivayo.

Chivayo praised Uriri as a “Senior Counsel par Excellence” before offering him the luxury vehicle, US$50,000 for fuel and another US$50,000 for his wife.

But Uriri and his wife respectfully declined the gifts, saying he had not done any work for Chivayo since June 2024 and that accepting such substantial benefits could compromise the perception of his professional independence.

Uriri said the previous work Chivayo referred to had been completed in his professional capacity and fully paid for.

He added that accepting the gifts would be inconsistent with the standards expected of legal practitioners and could affect public confidence in the profession.
