#SONA2026RECAP | Zimbabwe brings international football back to Harare as sports infrastructure expands

President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the return of international football to the National Sports Stadium marks progress in the government’s programme to rehabilitate and modernise the country’s sporting infrastructure, with the work carried out in partnership with the private sector and football stakeholders.

He said municipalities are now required to allocate part of their budgets to sporting and recreational facilities, with improvements already visible at Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo and Sakubva Stadium in Mutare. The government says the investment is also intended to strengthen systems for identifying and developing sporting talent.

Construction of the Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls is progressing ahead of the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which Zimbabwe will host alongside Harare Sports Club and Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

Technology-facilitated gender-based violence is driving some female journalists in Zimbabwe away from online platforms, with threats, sexual harassment, impersonation and coordinated attacks creating fear and affecting their ability to report. Speaking at the GEDESA capacity-building workshop in Harare, journalist Linda Mujuru said online attacks can move beyond social media, with threats made online sometimes translating into offline threats.

Chivi MP Exevia Mawoneke says high mobile data costs are choking Zimbabwe’s digital growth, calling for policy and regulatory reforms to make internet access more affordable. Moving a motion in Parliament, Mawoneke said Zimbabwe now has more than 13 million active internet subscriptions, but limited competition among service providers continues to keep data prices high, constraining innovation and digital participation.

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume says the hard-line approach to clearing vendors in the capital is being driven by growing concerns over drug sales, with some traders allegedly turning the streets into outlets for sexual herbs, loosely known as mushonga wemusana. This comes as vendors continue to resist the ongoing clean-up, saying street trading is their only source of income.
