Welcome to this pivotal session of the @AfroMediaSummit 2026.
The theme of this panel, “Media Innovation Pathways and Opportunities for International Cooperation,” is not just about the next big thing in technology.

35 years after Windhoek, we are still making the case for what was agreed in 1991. An indictment of how far we still have to go. The cancellation of @rightscon is this year's sharpest reminder: the freedom to gather & the freedom to speak are inseparable. https://t.co/TT0JVCvvnN
35 years ago, Namibia gave the world the Windhoek Declaration. Its message still holds. A free press is not a nicety. It is a condition of justice. On #WorldPressFreedomDay, we call on Namibia to give full effect to its own legacy. #WPFD2026#WHK35
@dantagogoseb The real issue is not whether platforms want to share data. It is whether we build frameworks that require proportionate, safeguarded access where the public interest demands it.
At #DigitalPlatformGovernance 2026, we are asking a critical question: How do we advance access to data in ways that strengthen human rights and public trust?
Private platforms hold granular, real-time data.
National statistical agencies hold representative, comparable data. Governance must protect both.
Looking forward to discussing how access to data can reinforce transparency, accountability, and robust public statistical infrastructure across Africa.
Today @ @UPTuks; Future Africa Campus, 10:00 to 11:30
Conference Room 2.
@dantagogoseb Absolutely. These are profit-driven companies, not public utilities. Exactly why we cannot rely on goodwill. Access2Data must sit within clear rules that protect commercial interests, AND protect the public interest. Markets follow incentives. Governance sets those incentives.
I’ve been reflecting on Botswana’s Media Bill & what it may signal for media freedom across the region. On the surface, it looks like reform. Beneath that are deeper questions about power, independence, & the future of journalism. See here: https://t.co/yNM9NBfc9f
Day one at #CTRLJ#CTRLJAfrica hosted at @GIBS_SA by the Media Leadership Think Tank & @TheIntlFund - a powerful gathering exploring journalism’s urgent challenges in an era of tech disruption, shrinking civic space, & fragile media economies.
#DigitalRights
In an era obsessed with speed & solutions, Nanjira Sambuli (@NiNanjira) reminds us: “Hope is a discipline. It demands that we wade into the uncomfortable, & be clear-eyed about where we are, what we’re up against, & what we’re aiming for.”

@achpr_cadhp Commissioner & Special Rapporteur on #FreedomOfExpression & #AccessToInformation Hon. Ourveena Geereesha Topsy-Sonoo in her keynote address at #NIMCA2025 reaffirmed the vital role of self-regulation & media councils in advancing freedom of expression in Africa. “Independent media and quality journalism are the watchdogs of democratic society.”
#PressFreedom #MediaRegulation #MediaEthics
In a fragmented information landscape, credibility is journalism’s strongest currency. Upholding ethics, verifying facts, and staying grounded in community realities is how we reclaim trust and relevance.
#AMP25
The @foodformzansi team were superb hosts on day one of #AMP25. I reflected on journalism’s role in a shifting world: across #Africa, repression now wears legal clothing. Media must respond strategically, building solidarity, challenging narratives & defending the right to report
When repression is legalised, resistance must be organised. That means cross-sector collaboration, strategic litigation & smarter use of tech, not just for storytelling, but for protection & accountability. #AMP25#JournalismIsNotACrime
Media freedom is not just about resisting repression; it’s about reimagining power. We need systems where accountability is local, values are lived, and journalism serves communities first.

#Namibia’s 🇳🇦 Outgoing media ombudsman Dr John Nakuta paid tribute to @zoetitus for her unwavering support at a recent gathering. Read our profile—a reflection on her work focused on the deep belief in every citizen’s right to a free & pluralistic press. https://t.co/7njDE4urJe
