Why keep giving away your most expensive model?

Two reads:

1.Competitive pressure: GPT-5.6 dropped this week, Grok 4.5 is live. Nobody pulls their flagship right now.

2.Buying time until Opus 5 is ready. New logical date? Right after July 19.

The bigger question: why Opus 5 at all when Fable 5 (Mythos-class, a tier above) exists? It probably won’t beat it — but it becomes the practical flagship: cheaper, permanently in-plan.

I gave the same prompt to 4 AI models:

Build a complete live Trader Desk with frontend + backend, real-time market data from external APIs for 8 symbols, and a custom dark-theme UI.

Results:

Fugu Ultra — 22,225 tokens, $0.51
Opus 4.8 — 15,802 tokens, $0.31
GPT-5.5 — 11,474 tokens, $0.26
GLM 5.2 — 13,677 tokens, $0.03

Fugu Ultra produced the most polished and feature-rich trading desk.

But surprisingly, GLM 5.2 came very close in quality while being around 17× cheaper.

Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.5 also performed well, giving solid results with a better balance between quality and cost.

• Limits on overseas access to frontier models — including unreleased ones
• Rules possibly covering open-weight models, not just closed ones
• Making AI tech leakage a national security crime
• Restrictions on foreign investment in Chinese AI startups
A tiered system is on the table: open models → filing system, high-performance → security reviews, frontier → China-only or no public release.

Context: this mirrors US export controls moving in the opposite direction. AI is officially a two-way tech wall now.
