This one really hurts💔 Just months into CNN-News18, I found a friend in Payal Mehta
Payal was one of the most influential and well-connected political reporters I knew, but you would never know it from the way she carried herself. She never threw her weight around. She was incredibly grounded, warm, generous with her time and sometimes, wonderfully childlike
She was fond of me. Would take time out to chat, advise me on stories and openly tell people she enjoyed talking to me because I kept her updated on everything going viral on social media ❤️ Those conversations will stay with me
To lose Payal at just 46 is heartbreaking, especially so soon after she lost her father. Wishing her family immense strength through this unimaginable loss
Rest in peace Payal... I will remember you very fondly❤️🙏
Im adding two pictures Payal herself sent me. She loved the ’80s AI trend and wanted to jump on the bandwagon too.. she sent me this ’80s version of herself, saying this was the one she liked the most ❤️ It feels especially precious today
Still trying to internalise the passing of Payal Mehta, professional colleague and personal friend of many years. Payal came from an old Gujarati family in Kolkata who spoke Bangla fluently, and often tripped me.
The most amazing thing about Payal was her energy level reflected in the speed with which she spoke. If there was something she felt I should know she’d call me while racing to her next appointment, and tell me in 60 seconds flat everything there was to know, ending with ‘Aachha dada, kotha hobey.”
As a journalist Payal was super high on information (she had told me about Census and delimitation long long before it came into news) and (at least to me) her stories were devoid of opinion and judgement. It’s not she didn’t have views — she did have views and they were pretty strong. But she never allowed them to permeate her reportage.
There was a facet to her which made her extraordinary as a person. She was kind, compassionate, caring. Very few in media who have professional proximity to power are known for these human qualities. Au contraire, they can be mean, petty and nasty.
Rapid Fire Payal is no more. Once this reality sinks in her earnest face and warm yet wry smile will pass into the realm of memory. My heartfelt condolences to her mother and sister.
May her soul gain sadgati.
ॐ शांति ।।
🙏🏽
My body, mind is numb
Do not know how this is even possible
Pained beyond measure..
Just a few days ago @payalmehta100 & i spoke for a good 30 mins discussing about her mom, life , taking care of our health and many other things.. in the past 3 weeks we had spoken several times. She told me how mum was the reason she was where she was. How her mum was that pillar of strength.. we discussed about how to use a particular app that could allow her to monitor her mums well being in case she needed to like i use one for my mother.. little did we know life has such terrible plans.. she wanted to just be there for her mom and spoke so lovingly of her..
Our last call was late at night- she said - tomorrow let’s meet up - you , me @_pallavighosh - i couldn’t make it the other day.. little did i know..
We had met last at her dad’s condolence meet.. and before that at her last podcast with @_pallavighosh - netaji uncut was with me. But i couldn’t meet her that last time at central delhi. Why did i just not make the time that day?
Even as i type and re type this ten times im unable to digest or fathom or process this loss.. loss to journalism.. loss of a super daughter.. loss of a friend. Loss of a sister..
Payal i wanted to meet you after i came back. We had planned to meet once
You will forever be missed my sister - my friend- my honest straight talking sounding board.
May God always bless you. May your family have the strength. Om Shanti
Lakshmi and I are deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Payal Mehta Ji.
She was an active and prominent journalist who will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.
Her passing is a heartbreaking loss for her family, who are still mourning the recent demise of her father. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they face this profound double loss.
Our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.
Om Shanti!
We never had the easiest of relations . Mostly garam , kabhi naram . We planned to re energise our podcasts .. a new show .. we planned to go to mumbai to can few episodes . Fate takes me there but for another reason . I will miss her in parliament most - between us we would divide the long hours . This was out last podcast .. I would want it to be this way - smiling / banter / crazy about news . Not many would understand what we shared .. what we felt .. how we dealt with issues - many saw the fight .. not the steely support for me .. and yes would miss those veg manchurians you forced me to have - and I know wahan bhi u making insta reels
DEAREST @payalmehta100
I know you're reading this because you always know what's happening everywhere. So there's no point trying to hide this from you.
We first met when you were a sports journalist. With an indefatigable energy, diligence personified and an unwavering commitment to excellence. In a sense, all the qualities of the champion athletes you reported on.
Then, ours was a doughty, scrappy channel, a modest enerprise that punched much above its weight and one that was always looking to break stories. But for that, we needed at the very least 10 Payals. Which is when I asked you, much to your astonishment, if you would like to cover the BJP. At that time, and I guess even now, that was the biggest game in town.
You've never looked back. You never got stage fright. You set new benchmarks in cultivating sources. You've looked power in the eye, you've doorstepped it and, in your classically irreverent way, you've asked it to come clean.
I know you'll be in heaven now doing much the same. God help those that run that place.
And yes, i am waiting for you send me the breaking news...
It feels surreal that a year has passed without Zubeen. There are moments I almost expect him to walk in, in that inimitable style of his. Then the loss sinks in once more. Perhaps this is what grief is , a void we learn to live with, but never truly accept.
@SauravDassss Why not just wish the winners ? We should be sporting if we claim not to be a political party - our students have voted let’s just respect t their vote
