Why I Think Reza Pahlavi Is the Best Possible Choice for the Transitional Period After the Downfall of the Islamic Republic Regime:
1. Symbolic legitimacy without a desire for power.
Reza Pahlavi is not trying to get an executive role, become prime minister, or run for president. He has said many times that he sees his role as a unifying figure and someone who helps guide the transition. This matters because it:
-Lowers fears of a “new dictator”
-Reduces conflicts of interest.
During a transitional period, having a widely accepted symbol is far more important than having an ambitious politician hungry for power.
2. Well-known, low-cost, and without a record of corruption or repression.
Compared to:
-Opposition figures who most people don’t really know
-Those who have a past connection or cooperation with the Islamic Republic
-Or people who are divisive or have lost public trust.
Reza Pahlavi:
-Has no history of repression, prison, executions, or corruption
-Has lived a relatively transparent personal life
-Has been out of power for 45 years
This gives him a clear advantage when it comes to starting fresh.
3. Acceptable to a wide spectrum of society.
The truth is that during a transition, basic agreement matters more than perfect solutions. Reza Pahlavi can bring together:
-Secular groups
-Nationalists
-Parts of the religious population that don’t support the regime
-And even people who are still undecided.
At least long enough to move past the Islamic Republic.
4. A credible bridge to the international community.
A transition without international trust and support simply can’t function. Reza Pahlavi:
-Is well known in the West
-Knows how diplomacy works
-Represents the image of a “normal Iran,” not an extremist group.
This means:
-Lower risk of sanctions
-Better chances of releasing frozen assets
-Less risk of Iran turning into cases like Syria or Libya.
5. A clear position on the future: the decision belongs to the people.
This may be the most important point. He has clearly said that:
-The type of government → should be decided by referendum
-The constitution → should be written by a constituent assembly
-Whether he stays or steps aside → should be decided by the people.
This makes it possible even for strong republicans to work with him during the transition.
Brief conclusion:
Reza Pahlavi is not necessarily the best future ruler.
But for the transitional period, he is:
-The least costly
-The least destabilizing
-And the most broadly acceptable option available.
Not because of his last name, but because, at this moment in history, there is no more realistic alternative.
