Paul, I can't thank you enough for the great work you do to bring us so much important & fascinating content sharing these bodies of knowledge I'd never even realized was out there!

I just found your channel this week and it's already become one of my favorites, easily the best & most exciting stuff I've come across in a long time!

Coming from a Western perspective, suddenly having a way to begin to encounter such a trove of "new" & fascinating knowledge for the first time is pure gold. I can confirm you are absolutely correct the way you describe the West tending to get very little (often essentially zero) exposure to much of anything from the areas you highlight, so starting to explore this stuff this week has been a lot of fun. You do a great job covering what at least I'd consider an ideal range of topics from all across this space; from the more historic Soviet paranormal & UAP info to recent scientific developments like this highly relevant and interesting Chinese paper. You have a great way of communicating these things clearly & in a way I find very fun & engaging to listen to. This channel is going to grow a ton, stuff like this is priceless!

Yes, despite centuries of effort we still do not have a satisfactory formal way of defining consciousness. So what? There's no need for us to solve this here.

As for the definitions we do currently have, we can just consider the word "consciousness" to describe "the capacity to have 'experiences'", or "the capacity to perceive/experience qualia"—good enough for almost anything other than when you want to design some means of testing for/detecting/validating consciousness. Really this is actually just a separate issue parallel to the argument made in the paper; there was really no need to bring this up here in the first place, but we're already going so hey.

So anyway, despite the definition issue very important to always remember that, strangely, in a very concrete sense we are all somehow still able to know exactly "what it is"; when we say "consciousness" everyone immediately knows exactly what we are referring to.

You suggested "dropping" the word because of the definition issue, no idea what you think this would accomplish here, this is just playing semantic games, especially pointless in this case where we have little need to rigorously define the thing at the moment. Whether we have a complete definition or a shit definition, whether we call it "consciousness" or "meat ghosting", it is fundamentally always the same concept and something important we of course need to be able to talk about.
