Public Health France reported about 1,000 excess deaths since June 24th during the record heatwave. 85% of those were people aged 65 and older. The figures are preliminary and expected to rise, with many deaths happening at home. A big chunk also came from drownings as people tried to cool off in rivers and lakes.

About 75% of homes in France do not have air conditioning. Only around 25% of French households have AC, which is why so many elderly people died at home during this heatwave.

It’s not normal. This June 2026 heatwave shattered France’s all-time national temperature records, breaking the previous hottest day mark on back-to-back days. Temperatures hit 44.3°C in some areas and Paris reached over 40°C, records for June.

Europe is warming faster than most places, so these extremes are becoming more common, but this one is unusually severe for this early in the summer.

In France and much of Europe, homes don’t have air conditioning for three main reasons:
1. Cost, Installing and running AC is expensive, and summers were historically mild.
2. Buildings, Many homes are old with thick stone walls that stay cool naturally.
3. Culture, People see AC as unnecessary and wasteful, preferring shutters, fans, and opening windows at night.
That’s why only about 25% of French homes have it.
