Sony has always been like this.... 26 years ago they angered the PS3 community by releasing firmware 3.21 on April 1, 2010, which removed the Other OS feature.
The PS3 was marketed as the ultimate media device. It supported bluray, games, and even let users install Linux on the original fat models, turning it into a versatile computer.

Sony promoted this capability, but when a hacker (George Hotz) used Other OS was able to access the deeper system memory, Sony in response removed it for "security reasons." Users who wanted to keep Linux had to skip the update and lose PlayStation Network access, online play, and future features.
The community felt betrayed. The move sparked massive backlash and ironically, it fueled the hacking scene helping lead to the first major PS3 jailbreaks and custom firmware later that year.
