The lives of 'ordinary' Ghanaians must mean something in this country. They really must.

13 people perished in a ghastly accident this morning. A fifteen year old child has lost both legs. And across official Ghana, it is business as usual. There has been little to no reaction from government.

Elsewhere in the world, when tragedies of this scale occur, political leaders fall over themselves to respond with statements upon statements extending condolences to victims, survivors and their families. There is a visible, human acknowledgment that something terrible has happened. Our politicians cannot be bothered, and that is putting it generously. Not even for the optics.

We all know, of course, that if a politician had died in similar circumstances, even in the course of their private lives, the national response would be remarkably different. You would feel it. The flags, the tributes, the solemn announcements. Thisvcountry would pause. 13 ordinary people died this morning, and the country has not paused.

13 people. Mothers. Fathers. Children. Breadwinners. Everyday people, just like you and I, who left their homes this morning for work, for school, for the hospital, for whatever reason life demanded of them that day. They are gone. In one fell swoop. And the numbers may yet rise.

It could be any of us. We all leave our homes every single day. We all make that same journey.
The lives of ordinary Ghanaians must mean something. It is long past time this country started acting like they do.

I’m so sorry to everyone who lost someone, their livelihoods, or who experienced other devastation in this month’s Accra floods. It’s heartbreaking. Flooding has affected our lives year after year, yet it seems not enough has been done to fix this endemic problem in the short or long term. The ting over taya me. We deserve better. For many years, I took barbs for refusing to call Israel's policy in East Jerusalem "ethnic cleansing". After all, there were 60,000 Palestinians in East Jerusalem in 1967, and 400,000 today. Occupation sucked, and included war crimes, but it wasn't ethnic cleansing.

That has changed now.

There are 3 Palestinian neighborhoods, all of whose residents are being or are about to be displaced: Batan al-Hawa and al-Bustan in Silwan, and Um Haroun in Sheik Jarrah. The latter two are being razed, or will be razed in the near future.

And immediately to the east, the Bedouin hamlet of Khan al-Akmar, adjacent to E-1, is about to be expelled, part of an attempt to "cleanse" Area C between East Jerusalem and the Jordan River valley of its Palestinian residents.

Regrettably, I can think of no other term to use other than "ethnic cleansing".

The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council has authorised the sale of livestock along the Kanda Highway and selected street medians in Accra ahead of Eid-ul-Adha.
