Iโve been yapping a lot on LinkedIn about the Startup PR Initiative - and wanted to bring the party here. โจ
Iโm initiating a global movement that aims to bring PR closer to the startup space.
๐งตHere are some problems with the relationship between startups and PR:

Iโm a big believer in PR agencies. Great ones are incredibly valuable and some of the best comms work in the world comes from them.
But I also have a client where we replaced an entire agency team with one early-career, high-performing IC.
The results have been phenomenal.
Managing an agency takes real time from founders and execs. Sometimes the better move is hiring one hungry, embedded comms operator and letting them run.
More companies that value storytelling should consider this, instead of defaulting to hiring an agency.
Iโve come to the conclusion that there is no version of yourself you can present to the world that will protect you from criticism, so just do what you have to do.
A lot of companies donโt actually want to transform with AI - they just want to be able to say โAIโ on earnings calls, packaging, and pitch decks so they look modern and investable.
Whatโs truly important? Having measurable AI impact to leverage for storytelling.
Every company racing to bolt AI onto everything is wasting money and confusing customers. Most should be doing far less, but doing it way more intentionally.
Something that we donโt talk about enough is the reality that a lot of AI products + tools are failing silently.

myspace was the greatest social media platform ever made and nobody gives it enough credit.
you had to learn basic html and css just to make your page not look terrible.
millions of kids were accidentally learning how to code at 14 because they wanted a cooler profile than their friends
that was real engagement.
you built something. you problem solved. you googled why your background image was broken and figured it out.
every platform since then has gone the opposite direction. simpler layouts, fewer options, zero customization to express oneโs self.
they donโt want you building anythingโฆ
they want you scrolling.
we went from a generation that taught itself code through myspace to a generation that canโt change a font without an app.
and somehow we call it โprogressโ
just my opinion.
