Schumer leads Democrats in killing a bill that would have forced AI data centers to cover rising electricity costs for everyday Americans — despite the legislation cruising through the House with massive bipartisan support.

The Ratepayer Protection Act would have created a standard requiring tech companies and their data centers to bear the brunt of surging power bills, an issue 70% of voters across both parties say they care about. Democrats called it a "toothless messaging bill" designed to boost vulnerable Sen. Jon Husted in Ohio, where his opponent has branded him the "face of data centers."

The move could backfire. By blocking the bill, Democrats may have handed Husted exactly the campaign ammunition they were trying to deny him — proof that the other side killed a popular consumer protection measure heading into the midterms.
