Nigeria’s health sector is in crisis, and chronic underfunding is making it worse.

The numbers are painful. Nigeria is only 2.5% of the world’s population, yet we account for nearly 20% of global maternal deaths. About 75,000 women die each year while giving life. That is roughly 205 every day. One in nine children will not reach their fifth birthday. Only about 20% of Primary Healthcare Centres are fully functional.
Seven in ten Nigerians pay for healthcare out of pocket. Each year, 1.5 million people are pushed into poverty simply because they got sick.

Both chambers of the National Assembly promised to allocate 15% of the national budget to health in line with the Abuja Declaration. That promise is yet to be fulfilled.
Healthcare cannot remain underfunded while Nigerians keep paying with their lives.
