Leon Khumalo, the spokesperson of the Khumalo family of slain Zimbabwean mother Nothabo Zandile Khumalo killed with her two daughters Natalie and Nala a month ago allegedly by her husband Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma, giving an update on the repatriation of their bodies from the United Kingdom to their home town, Bulawayo.
The bodies are now in Ethiopia on their way back home.

I reposted this poster on my Facebook page yesterday. It was originally posted by Nyaradzo Funeral, and I simply shared it. I do not usually do that, but this case tore at me emotionally.
It moved me because I thought this woman could have been my sister or daughter, and those two girls could have been my nieces. I could not wrap my head around how anyone could do this.

The purpose of this post, however, is to address something else that shocked me; the combined defence mounted by some Zimbabwean and South African men on behalf of a killer who murdered his own wife and children. Some of the reasons offered are as ridiculous as they come.

A very good friend of mine, one of the top businesswomen in Africa, said something profound about this. She said it might upset people, but it could be true.
When the white man came to Africa, he claimed we needed to be civilised. This was said to justify colonialism, but it was framed as fact based on our behavior. This kind of behavior does not happen only within our race or on our continent. It happens elsewhere too.

But in other places, people do not defend it in this way. Where it is defended elsewhere, it is usually rooted in religion, such as when a woman is killed to protect her family’s honour after refusing an arranged marriage. It is diabolical, but so are many things done in the name of religion.

This case is not that. This is a man who went home and viciously killed his wife, so viciously that British investigators, who spoke to journalist friends of mine, said they had never seen anything like it. He then killed his daughters using frightening methods according to investigators. Those investigators advised the family against viewing the bodies.

That is how terrible this killing was. Yet some people in our communities, especially the Zimbabwean community, have been defending him, saying she could have done this or that. This brings us back to what my friend was saying; that we are still evolving, that our minds still need civilising.

It has nothing to do with education alone, because this man was educated, and so are many of the people defending his actions. Imagine a human being defending the killing of a woman and her children by their own husband and father.

It shows how backward some of us still are. No matter how emotionally provoked someone claims to be, defending this kind of act only proves the point that we still have work to do. His actions were uncivilised, and the response to them is even more uncivilised.

How do we deal with a society that still has members who justify the murder of a woman and two children? No matter what happened beforehand, how can anyone justify that?

I want to speak directly to young men reading this, the millions of young men who follow me on my social media platforms. Even if you catch your woman with another man, even if she tells you she no longer wants you, nothing justifies killing her. Doing so only proves you are a fool, a loser. Nothing whatsoever justifies it.

Anyone who defends such an act fits squarely within the definition of uncivilised.

I hope the young men reading this, who may have thought it was acceptable to kill a woman or her (your) children over a dispute, will reflect on what I am saying. Being a man is not about using brute violence. Being a man means containing your emotions when angry.

Brute force can be used by anyone with access to the means of violence, but civilisation requires a disciplined and sophisticated mind. Do not kill another man and woman’s child. If she no longer wants to be with you, let her go. Do not kill your own children because a woman has left you.

The tragedy is that these acts of violence are almost always triggered by something the perpetrator himself set in motion, yet the men who defend this behavior rarely want to talk about that. They do not want to talk about the infidelity or the toxicity they themselves bring into marriages.
