As a Xhosa person, I must say; Kubuhlungu to see people carelessly speak about isiko lolwaluko and disregard it without understanding what is actually going on there.

Among many other things, there’s illegal initiation schools. There’s also kids who run from home to initiation schools against their parents wishes because of peer pressure. Now what do you think will happen in instances like that? Where family members and health care practitioners have no access? Kids will get sick and die.

Crime is a big problem in South Africa and sadly it also exists in initiation schools. The price? Death. I wish more awareness about this was raised to help fight these illegal initiation schools and to stop kids from doing things without parental guidance.

But please, don’t carelessly speak about something so important to us without understanding what’s actually happening. You guys may not understand the significance of the whole tradition and that’s absolutely fine but please, respect those who practice it.
