Trump’s contempt for Venezuelans doesn’t need to be stated. His actions speak for themselves. In Doral, Venezuelans with work permits and legal immigration proceedings are being detained and facing bonds that can be financially devastating for any family. Meanwhile, in Venezuela, instead of using America’s enormous leverage to push for a democratic transition and free elections, Trump appears increasingly willing to accommodate Delcy Rodríguez, Jorge Rodríguez, and Diosdado Cabello.
When you punish the Venezuelans who came to the United States seeking a legal life while accommodating the very people who sustain the dictatorship that forced them to flee, the message is difficult to interpret any other way. That is not solidarity with Venezuelans. It is contempt expressed through policy.
