A friend of mine was laid off from his marketing job about a month ago along with a few other people on his team.

Yesterday he checked the company’s careers page and nearly laughed when he saw his old position posted again. The catch? What used to be a $78K salaried role with benefits had been turned into an hourly job with no benefits and no guarantee of consistent hours.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, another former coworker found that his old role had been repackaged as a short-term “volunteer” position. Apparently the company would rather bring in students working for internship credit than pay someone an actual salary.

Maybe I’m missing something, but it’s hard not to see what’s happening. Companies talk endlessly about budget cuts and tough economic conditions, yet somehow the work still needs to be done. The difference is they’re finding cheaper ways to get it done.

The job market feels ruthless right now. People aren’t just competing for jobs anymore they’re competing against downgraded versions of the jobs that used to exist.

If you have stable employment, decent pay, and benefits, you’re in a better position than you might realize. A lot of workers are discovering that the roles they lost aren’t disappearing they’re just coming back with fewer protections and a much lower price tag.
