Don't Underestimate an Internship...
In February this year, a young graduate reached out to me after being invited for an internship interview.
Unfortunately, I was on the road and couldn't coach him as I normally would. Instead, I sent him a list of possible internship interview questions and encouraged him to prepare thoroughly.
He got the internship.
This week, I received another booking from the same young man.
This time, it wasn't for another internship.
It was for an interview for a permanent position within the same company.
Think about that for a moment.
Just a few months ago, he had no work experience. Today, he has practical exposure, understands the workplace, has built relationships, and can confidently compete for entry-level positions.
That is the power of an internship.
Over the past five years, I have coached graduates and worked closely with a GenZs.
They do not always need years of experience to become valuable employees.
What they need is an opportunity.
Give them a supportive environment, clear expectations, constructive feedback, and leaders who are willing to teach. Many of them learn incredibly fast, adapt quickly to technology, and bring fresh ideas that challenge the way we've always done things.
As leaders, our responsibility is not only to recruit experience.
It is to identify potential, invest in people, and create pathways for them to grow.
At Hito HR and Training Consultants, I have seen this firsthand.
One of our interns recently transitioned into a permanent position. Why? Because of consistent commitment, a willingness to learn, reliability, and an impressive ability to deliver quality work at speed.
The internship became more than a learning opportunity. It became an extended interview.
To employers, I would say this, don't treat internships as a compliance exercise or a way to fill temporary gaps. Treat them as a talent pipeline. Some of your future top performers are already sitting in your internship programme.
To interns, if you secure an internship, don't see it as "just an internship." Show up early, ask questions, volunteer for projects and learn as much as you can. Build relationships. Every day is an opportunity to demonstrate that you deserve to stay.
Your first job may not start with a permanent contract.
It may start with an internship that opens doors you never imagined.
Sometimes, all someone needs is one opportunity and one leader willing to believe in their potential.
