In Sylvan Lake, I spoke with volunteers collecting signatures for Alberta independence (@stayfreealberta) when we started discussing something serious.

The Premier of BC called this movement “treasonous.”

That kind of language is dangerous.

We are following a peaceful, democratic process under Canadian law — the same way Quebec held two referendums. When politicians use extreme words, some people may take that as permission to escalate conflict.

Disagreement is part of democracy. Violence is not.

Alberta’s future must be decided through peaceful conversation and lawful civic participation.

Calling a referendum “treason” is an attack on democracy itself.

As Eva Chipiuk made clear, a referendum is citizens expressing their will through a lawful, peaceful vote.

Premier Danielle Smith says Alberta needs its own immigration system with a “sustainable” intake. She stated federal policies have allowed too many newcomers too quickly, straining health care, schools, housing, and jobs.

Smith wants a system like Quebec’s, selecting immigrants based on language, culture, and employability. She emphasises that newcomers should contribute as taxpayers before accessing social programs, including health care, education, and child care.

Permanent residents would only receive full benefits after meeting these requirements, and newcomers lacking basic English would face limitations until they integrate.
