@biglawbro The recording of the call is the issue. It’s still a transcript, and transcripts can be discoverable. That’s the issue. We don’t allow us or clients to record calls using firm managed apps (Teams/Zoom) for this reason. This is the view of the former DOJ prosecutors I work with
@pstAsiatech And you seem to think your view is based on an objective assessment of the facts at issue, rather than aligned with the incentives from your job?
@biglawbro Have seen your tweets. Great idea. Have you thought about the qualifications etc you’ll have to get in order to handle client data? Have heard from folks in my first it can be a nightmare to onboard 3rd party vendors including AI
@skylarromines He is probably trying to be respectful of your wishes by not continuing to send you flowers? Why would he keep sending them to you if you told him he didn’t have a shot? Think you’re being a little unfair here …
@zijing_wu@DesmondShum You can’t fabricate advanced node chips for AI training and inference without advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment. China does not have indigenous capability to make such equipment, and can’t get it bc of export controls. Won’t be a short pain”
@jons6111 @SteelToeScribe Fair. I’m a reg lawyer, so I see client problems. A fav line from a rainmaker, tho, is telling a client that we’ll make some money if they listen to us & pass on this opp or they can go proceed, & we’ll make a lot of money when they come back to us to handle the govt subpoena
@SteelToeScribe And, as lawyers, our perception can be skewed bc we mainly see the deals or issues that go wrong. We don’t see the maybe 9-10 other deals that hit and make the money counter go 💰💰💰
@SteelToeScribe Lawyers will never make as much money as biz people because lawyers don’t own risk. We identify it and help the biz make the decision, but it should always be the biz making the decision. Never want to put yourself in the client’s shoes. They own it.
@DrescherLaw Truth. A lot of people think the practice of law is about reading, writing, and talking. That’s part of it, but it really all comes down to trust and relationships. This is another example.
@BarExamTutor @DrescherLaw 6th year based in DC in a band 1 national security practice, and this is how it works for me. Absolutely merit based. Not the same flex for associates not billing a lot/doing good work. If you are, though, sometimes you can get a Friday night deadline pushed to Sunday night :)
@heyitsalexsu I think you (and the author) are conflating experience with an unwillingness to try new things. With AI resulting in much more legal product being produced, experienced” lawyers will have the judgment & reps to identify what is and is not helpful. It’s not a tax.
@loganbrown799 Not sure about this take applied to this situation. One of the top restructuring practices in the world, with some of the highest rates, in an $8 billion matter, for a pretty standard filing. Clients expect SullCrom to get these perfect & they pay for that perfection.
@ryanmckeen We definitely need a better system, but a lot of law firm leaders and partners would disagree with this statement. At large law firm, being good = more demand = more hours. So hours are a proxy for demand which is a proxy for quality. Need to break the cycle.
@SteelToeScribe Part of making the jump as an attorney seems to be high self-confidence and belief in self (if I don’t believe in myself why would a client trust me to rep their interests?). Easy for those qualities to slide into egoism and self-worth.
