Towards this very hour last year, I was before the Tabernacle in our chapel in Owerri. I was saying a quick prayer when my phone rang.

A friend called me that his mother needed the last sacraments at a nearby hospital. I sped off to the place. I administered the sacrament of Extreme Unction to her and left.

Later, my friend called me that his mother had passed. He told me that she was unconscious before I got to the hospital and immediately I reached the door of the ward where she was, she muttered to her daughter in-law that "the priest is here." Nobody had told her that I was coming. She sensed my presence.

I was told that her eyes were closed and she hadn't spoken until that very moment. She received Viaticum and died. Her son was very satisfied. He thanked me greatly.

He said that his mother was devoted to Mary, and she said the rosary everyday. Mary granted her the privilege of having the last sacraments before her death.

Today I remember this, and I give God all the glory.

The Canaanite woman teaches us not to give up when God seems silent. She kept asking, kept trusting, kept pushing, and kept believing. Whatever you are praying for today, do not lose heart. Keep knocking. Keep praying. Keep trusting. God sees the faith behind your persistence.
