W. J. Cearns was the founder of Wimbledon Stadium and chairman of West Ham United F.C. He died in 1950. This competition was named in his honour in 1951 and was staged at Wimbledon until 2017 (later moved to Central Park).
Sad end ... Wimbledon Stadium (opened in 1928) closed today in 2017 (purchased by Galliard Homes to build 600 new apartments and a new football stadium) and was demolished the following year.
