$MSTR
Little example of some flow terminology and how I am interpreting this.
Some basic concepts to understand:
BTO - Buy to Open (Opening Long calls/bullish bet)
STO - Sell to Open (Opening Short calls/bearish bet)
BTC - Buy to Close (Buying short calls back to close)
STC - Sell to Close (Selling long calls to close)
Most retail traders are. buying to open calls/puts and selling to close those same positions for profit or loss.
However, selling options is a little more advanced strategy that can still be profitable. VERY important to understand when trying to interpret options flow. Put selling has been the major tell for a massive incoming bullish move!
Onto the example:
Trader comes in 11/8 and STO (sells to open) these weekly $MSTR ITM $172.50 calls. This is a bearish bet, hoping the stock moves sharply down and these calls lose value quickly. We know this is an opening position since OI has been exceed. Trader cannot be closing long calls since there isnt any OI.
We do not know if this trader is hedging a long position i.e covered calls. One of the downsides of analyzing flow is you never know if a position is a hedge etc for a larger position.
Late day Friday, same trader comes in and BTC (buys to close) those same calls for a massive loss.
In the BlackBox system, you can see the yellow opening orders at the bid and white (presumably) closing positions at the ask. Unusual Whales showing the same data, just differently and a little bit easier to visualize.
We can assume it is the same player since it is the same number of contracts, same strike expiry etc. The final validation would have been to check OI, but since this contract expired Friday, we are unable to do so.
I am not saying one system is better than the other. For our discord members, I always cross reference the 2 systems to ensure they are aligned before entering a trade. I like many of the tools the UW have put into the platform. However, for LIVE daily analysis I like BBS. That's just me.
TLDR; Big whales sells calls, trade goes against him bigly, pays through the nose to cover his butt.
