In Bellville, a woman listed a couch on Facebook Marketplace for R4,500. A buyer contacted her and sounded normal, sent proof of payment, and said the money was “held” until she verified her bank account.

By 21:14, R42,870 was gone from her bank accounts. The bank said it was authenticated and they could not help her.

Complaint #5: Complainant paid R580 000 into the firm’s trust account. This was the purchase price for a house she was buying. NN failed to furnish complainant with a copy of the offer to purchase signed by the seller. When she asked for a refund of the purchase price, she was told that a portion of it had already been paid to the seller.

Mr M provided the complainant with banking details and the complainant paid the following amounts: R186 339.40, R31 000 and R40 000. It appeared that the banking details provided by Mr M were his own personal banking details.

The administration of the deceased estate has not been finalised.

The complainant paid an amount of R98 356.68 to NN in order for her to settle an outstanding debt with Wesbank. NN failed to pay Wesbank and the car was then repossessed. Complainant had to incur further debt to attempt to retain the car.

Complainant was then requested by Mr M to make further payments because she owed the firm money.
