When you registered as an organ donor, were you informed that doctors might clamp off the blood flow to your brain to make you brain dead on purpose?

In order to maximize the number and quality of transplantable organs, doctors have developed the NRP (Normothermic Regional Perfusion) technique.

In patients whose support is being withdrawn for organ donation, a prolonged period of gasping for breath (hypoxia) damages the organs.

To remedy this, once pulselessness is achieved, surgery begins with clamping off the blood flow to the brain. Then, using a cardiac bypass machine, doctors perform a complete resuscitation on the organs such that your heart starts beating again in your own chest.

The initial step of clamping brain circulation is so you don’t wake up — AND to cover your death legally so doctors don’t get sued for homicide.

NRP plays fast and loose with the legal definitions of death under the Uniform Determination of Death Act:

1. Death is initially declared as the “irreversible” cessation of circulatory and respiratory functions.

But because doctors are going to restart your heart (showing the cessation wasn’t actually irreversible),

2. They clamp off circulation to your brain so that now your death is defined under the brain death clause of the UDDA, the “irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain including the brain stem.”

That way when your heart starts beating again in your own chest, doctors can say you were legally dead when they cut out your beating heart to put into someone else.
