💥EXPLOSIVO: Pescadores de pota en Perú trabajan a pérdida mientras los chinos depredan nuestro mar a escala industrial.

La pesca artesanal de calamar gigante o pota enfrenta una grave crisis en Perú, según la Sociedad Nacional de Pesca Artesanal (Sonapescal). Las faenas duran varios días y los pescadores zarpan con la esperanza de un precio que cubra gastos, pero al volver al muelle encuentran valores aún más bajos, mientras el combustible y otros insumos suben durante la travesía. Esta falta de previsibilidad afecta la sostenibilidad de miles de familias que dependen de esta actividad en los principales puertos del país.

Actualmente, el kilo de pota se paga a 2,2 soles en Paita y solo 1,7 soles en el Callao, muy por debajo del promedio de 3 soles de inicios de año y de los 3,5 soles del mismo periodo en 2023. Incluso en épocas de escasez, cuando el precio suele superar los 5 soles por kilo, los valores no se recuperan. A esto se suma el encarecimiento de hielo, víveres y repuestos, lo que impide a armadores y tripulantes calcular si cada viaje generará ganancias o pérdidas.

Los armadores, que financian combustible, mantenimiento y víveres, son los más golpeados, ya que no pueden afrontar reparaciones si la embarcación sufre desperfectos.

La presidenta de Sonapescal, Elsa Vega, advirtió que los ingresos actuales no alcanzan para la canasta familiar de los pescadores. El gremio exige al Ministerio de la Producción (Produce) intervención urgente para establecer mecanismos transparentes y precios que cubran costos reales, antes de que esta actividad estratégica para la economía y la seguridad alimentaria desaparezca.

A esta crisis de la pota se suma un mal mayor: la flota china. Se trata de una de las más grandes del mundo en la pesca de calamar gigante (pota) y opera principalmente en alta mar, justo al límite de las 200 millas de la zona económica exclusiva de Perú. Capturan volúmenes enormes sin las mismas restricciones que tienen los pescadores artesanales peruanos (como cuotas y temporadas), lo que genera sobreexplotación y aumenta la oferta en el mercado, presionando los precios a la baja en los puertos peruanos.

En años recientes, China ha desplazado a Perú como principal productor mundial de pota en algunos periodos, con capturas que superan las 400-500 mil toneladas anuales. Organizaciones como Sonapescal (la misma que denuncia la crisis) y otros gremios de Perú, Chile y Ecuador han criticado esta “competencia desigual”: mientras los artesanales peruanos salen por varios días con altos costos y riesgos, la flota china pesca 365 días al año con buques industriales grandes y eficientes. Esto contribuye al derrumbe de precios (como los 1,7-2,2 soles por kilo actuales) y reduce la rentabilidad de los viajes.

Además, hay denuncias recurrentes de pesca ilegal, no declarada y no reglamentada (INDNR) por parte de barcos chinos cerca de las fronteras marítimas peruanas, y que inclusiva ingresan a cargar combustible a las costas peruanas, que generan pérdidas estimadas en cientos de millones de dólares al año para el país. Esto agrava la saturación del mercado y afecta directamente a los armadores y tripulantes artesanales que ya luchan contra el alza de combustibles e insumos.

La fuerte presencia china en la pesquería regional es un factor clave que explica parte de la caída de precios y la crisis de sostenibilidad.
