Perhaps for the first time, Ramzi sees himself, his reflection in the mirror. He had never seen himself before, never realized just how beautiful and gentle he truly is. Today, it happened while we were on the road. He stopped me, drawn to the mirror, and started screaming and smiling with joy! I’ve never seen him this excited before. Naya held him and said, "That’s you, Ramzi, see how handsome you are?" Ramzi stood there, his eyes full of curiosity and wonder, looking at the child in the mirror—just like his movements, from another world—an innocent child, smiling and laughing, unaware of the death of hope surrounding us.

For the first time, Ramzi sees himself as we see him. For the first time, Ramzi touches his own reflection. He saw another side of himself in the mirror, perhaps the childhood he could have lived in better conditions. Maybe he saw the innocence that has been stolen from him by a war of extermination, amidst the sounds of explosions, the rivers of blood, and the rubble of homes!

A few brief moments, and we continued our way—me, Rita, Naya, and Ramzi—carrying with us Ramzi's smile. Will we ever return to how things were? Will Ramzi ever live a normal life?
