President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says the United Nations should elect a woman as its next Secretary-General and break an eight-decade record of men's leadership.

Nandi-Ndaitwah advocated for women leadership during her address to the UN General Assembly as the race to succeed António Guterres enters its final phase.

She said no woman has occupied the UN’s top post since the organisation was established 80 years ago, despite gender equality being promoted across the international system.

Seven candidates remain in the race to succeed Guterres, after former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet withdrew from the contest last week.

The four women are Ecuador’s Ivonne Baki and María Fernanda Espinosa, Costa Rica’s Rebeca Grynspan, and Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett.

The male candidates are Uganda’s Olara Otunnu, Senegal’s former President Macky Sall, and Argentina’s Rafael Grossi.

Under Article 97 of the UN Charter, the Security Council recommends a candidate to the General Assembly, which then appoints the Secretary-General.
