Dismantling a century of reliable energy infrastructure built on coal, oil and gas risks the ultimate decline of Western society.

The scale of the planned transition to renewables is simply colossal, and it's being led by hardline socialist Antonio Guterres, the head of the United Nations. McKinsey estimates that achieving net-zero by 2050 would require roughly $275 trillion in cumulative spending on physical assets between 2021 and 2050 — an average of $9.2 trillion every year.

An even more limited build-out of new renewable infrastructure carries a nominal price tag in the hundreds of trillions. Yet this massive investment has not delivered a decisive shift away from hydrocarbons.

Coal, oil and gas — the so-called fossil fuels — still supply around 81% of the world’s primary energy, while wind and solar together account for only about 6–7%.

Serious practical obstacles have received too little attention. Wind turbines and solar panels typically need replacement within 20–30 years, creating a continuous loop of construction, dismantling and disposal.

The growing volume of decommissioned blades and panels is already emerging as a landfill and recycling crisis. Intermittency remains unresolved at the scale required for modern industrial societies, and the mining and materials intensity of the transition is both vast and expensive.

Meanwhile, proven reserves of coal, oil and gas remain substantial and could support current levels of use for many decades:

* Proven coal reserves of approximately 1.06 trillion tonnes — enough for roughly 130 years.
* Proven natural gas reserves of around 7,300 trillion cubic feet — enough for well over a century in many estimates.
* Proven oil reserves of about 1.65–1.7 trillion barrels — enough for roughly 50 years at today’s consumption.

The actual recoverable resource base is likely to be larger still. Land covers only about 29% of the Earth’s surface (and a portion of that is locked under ice), leaving the oceans — more than 70% of the planet — as a still incompletely explored domain for hydrocarbons.

One under-discussed consequence of rising atmospheric CO₂ is the measurable expansion of global green leaf area. Satellite records show widespread 'greening', with CO₂ fertilisation identified as a major driver. This has contributed to higher plant growth across large parts of the planet.

Rushing into an unproven, high-cost energy system at this scale carries real risks: for higher electricity prices, heavy claims on public finances and slower modernisation in the Global South. It is also likely to lock Western economies into a smaller, less competitive and less reliable energy future.

The stakes are just enormous, with no margin for error.
