In 1988 Dolly Parton pulled every 7th and 8th grader in Sevier County into a room and told them to pick a buddy.
She made them sign a contract.. if BOTH graduate, she hands you both $500. One fails, nobody gets paid.
The county dropout rate went from 35% to 6%.
She handed out the checks herself.
In 1989 she offered $500 to every kid in the county who wanted to go to the local college.
When Gatlinburg burned in 2016, she sent 900 families $1,000 a month for six months.
You've probably heard that part.
Here's the part you haven't:
The fund raised more than expected, so she showed up in May and handed every one of those families another $5,000 on top.
Then she quietly put $3 million into the recovery group that handles the years after the news trucks leave.
She built her county an entire hospital.
She played a benefit concert in 2007, Dollywood and the Stampede matched it, and LeConte Medical Center opened in 2010 with a birthing unit and a women's center in it.
In 2022 she started covering 100% of tuition, books, and fees for Dollywood employees.
Full-time, part-time, AND seasonal.
In 1991 she paid for a bald eagle sanctuary because the birds couldn't be released back into the wild, no press release.
And when Hurricane Helene came through here in Western North Carolina, she wrote a personal check for $1 million and her companies matched it.
She didn't owe North Carolina anything, but she helped us anyway.
She started the Imagination Library because her daddy couldn't read or write. Before he passed, he told her it was the most important thing she ever did.
Rest in Peace, Dolly 🇺🇸
ned inventing the spidey-tracker and mj not moving away for a possible job offer because she feels like she should be waiting on something, oh peter you’re still so loved, even in being forgotten
I at least need 3-4 more movies with them together before they move on to someone else. We finally have an amazing actor/director duo with a director that has an insane visual vision and I need MORE of that.
🗣️ Interviewer: The Argentina team has faced cheating and refereeing allegations since the group stage. Do you think the officiating has been fair, or do you believe there’s been some favoritism?
Zlatan Ibrahimović: To be honest, this World Cup feels like it’s already been prepared for Argentina to win. The refereeing has looked heavily biased in almost every match they’ve played. It started in the group stage when Messi stepped on an opponent, then there were controversial moments against Cape Verde, Egypt, and now Switzerland.
At this point, it doesn’t even feel like a genuine competition anymore, it looks like a show designed for Argentina to win without having to struggle. There have been several highly questionable decisions. Incidents that would normally be called against other teams are ignored when Argentina is involved. On top of that, Argentina’s players seem to avoid yellow and red cards for reckless challenges that would usually be punished. From my perspective, that’s unfair and goes against the spirit of the game.
🗣️ Interviewer: “Argentina has been involved in several controversial refereeing decisions during this World Cup. Do you think it’s just a coincidence, or do you believe something suspicious is going on?”
Zlatan Ibrahimović: “After watching the game against Cape Verde, I can no longer believe it’s just a coincidence. The referee seemed to give 9 out of 10 key decisions in Argentina’s favor. There were several fouls on Cape Verde players that he ignored. He allowed Messi to take a quick free kick before the defensive wall had been properly set, and Messi wasn’t cautioned. The amount of added time also seemed to go well beyond what was expected.
When you look at all of this, it makes you question whether Argentina is being treated differently from other countries. If you have to win the World Cup amid controversy every time, then there’s nothing to brag about because it feels as though the tournament was made easier for you it wasn’t earned, but bought.”
i like how the U.S. soccer team is the only one people ever specify as the *men’s* because the U.S. women’s team is a hydrogen bomb while the men’s is a coughing baby
