Don't allow yourself to "die for Kenya," if such a thing even exists. You'll die, be buried, and the country will carry on. No nation is healed by the needless loss of its young people. The last thing your family wants is to lose you for a cause that changes nothing. Mũkua tũhũ.
Many women are survivors and victims of sexual assault and harassment. I am one. I did not file a police report. The perpetrator was the father of my child, six months after we had split up. It happened twice, not once. In the privacy of my own home, where there is no CCTV or easy way of accumulating evidence. The first time was during a co-parenting dinner, where I fell asleep due to exhaustion on a couch and found him having removed my shorts and trying to go down on me. I was terrified and immediately kicked him out of the house when I woke up to this. For the sake of my two year old daughter and his other children, I did not file charges but discontinued ever being in the same space as him. Months later, I allowed him to come back into the house and see my daughter, while I was upstairs sleeping. He tricked the ladies who were downstairs at the time and said I had called him and wanted to talk to him and came up in to my room while I was sleeping. I woke up to him with his pants removed and trying to enter inside of me. The hatred, the disgust, the anger, the violation, the rage all lives with me to this day. I have never shared this publicly, and perhaps I was wrong by choosing to not put him behind bars for this. I have spent the majority of my niece’s life raising her due to her father (my brother) behind bars for other reasons. Broken families, broken women, violated women are amongst us everywhere.
Shame on those who discredit their bravery to tell their stories. “Lack of sufficient evidence” is how sexual predators can become emboldened. Is it better to wait for a case of rape for there to be sufficient evidence? Is that the bar that should be set? Even in cases of rape, do you understand the barriers women face in medical examinations and reporting much less legal processes that follow? To dismiss this as malicious defamation is wrong, unlawful and simply void of a victim-centered approach, guided by morals and care for safeguarding and a thorough response to alleged misconduct in a workplace.
If there is a pattern of allegations against someone, the victims deserve support along their journey of being brave enough to bring their experiences forward. The investigation, documentation of allegations, and burden of ‘proof’ should also be upon the investigating body. In a workplace, whether voluntary or paid, the Kenyan law has clear processes for how allegations of workplace sexual harassment or assault should be handled and what consists of assault and harassment. Do your research. Evidence will not always be available, but workplace procedures and laws must be respected, regardless of if something happens within a political party or a corporation.
@fit_ermined , you are not alone. I stand with you amidst this challenging time. This is not the first I have heard of sexual misconduct and harassment by Neto. Perpetrators do not deserve protection. Difficult conversations must be had and ‘difficult’ decisions made. I stand with you, and thank you @Honeyfarsafi for also speaking your truth. Thank you to all those who have stood up for and stood with Shakira, and the other ladies, some of which are not even included in the three referenced here within. Your experience and your pain will not be erased by a committee’s conclusion.
Love, strength and courage to all victims and survivors. May we keep raising our voices and open the doors for others to stand up, speak up, and continue the important fight for dignity and our rights.
Living in the 21st Century is unreal. Nimekaa hapa about to load a game, food is in the oven, dishes are clean. Ingekuwa another time, ndo ningekuwa nimetoka hunting and gathering.
@FourthArchetype My old lady once referred to some sects from Muranga that are apparently cults. She was saying they had misled a whole teacher. They even pair people up.
If I had to describe Kenya in one word, it would be "impunity." Too many people act with the expectation that there will be little to no accountability whether in schools, on the roads, or in politics etc. Nowadays this is being exarcebated with "rationalisation".
