As an Orthodox Christian, I don't need a summary of my own history from you; I live it. Knowing the history of dhimmitude doesn't make me indifferent to the image of God in my neighbors today, nor am I willing to be subjugated by a 'dhimmitude' of a different name. I believe in the right of nations to exist, but I won't allow the 'Mother Church' to be used as a political prop while its living members are erased. To 'shush' grief for the innocent lives in Gaza or the flight of our Levantine brethren isn't a defense of tradition; it's a denial of it. I’m not playing a scorecard; I’m honoring the Creator.

History isn't a zero-sum game of 'who came first.' The indigenous Christians of the Levant, descendants of the region’s earliest inhabitants, have a 2,000-year history that isn't a prop for anyone’s politics. Hamas’s atrocities are horrific, but using them to silence grief for the thousands of innocent lives lost in Gaza is the definition of sophistry. We can condemn violence while still mourning the human beings crushed by the response. Both things are true, if you allow yourself to see the humanity in both.
