While studying for his undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota between 1917 and 1920, Dr. Alfred Xuma (left) joined the St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church in St. Paul. Xuma taught Sunday school at the church, where he met and befriended a young Roy Wilkins. Roy Wilkins went on to become a towering figure in the American Civil Rights Movement, serving as the Executive Secretary of the NAACP from 1955 to 1977.
